About Pregnancy and Labour Massage

Pregnancy should be a wonderful experience and specific massage techniques can help enhance this unique time.

During pregnancy women experience a range of physiological and emotional changes which vary from mother to mother. These changes are caused by the release of hormones and, as the baby grows the mother’s body adapts to accommodate the growing infant.

Some of more common physiological changes:

  • Muscle stiffness/cramp
  • Back/Sciatic pain
  • Headaches
  • Tender breasts
  • Poor lymphatic drainage
  • Insomnia/Fatigue

Whilst the emotional effects of pregnancy can include:

  • Anxiety/Nervousness
  • Apprehension
  • Tearfulness
  • Forgetfulness/Clumsiness
  • Lack of confidence about their appearance

Pregnancy massage is very different from normal massage, as it is designed to suit the needs of the mother-to-be, taking into account positioning, oils used and massage technique.  Each pregnancy massage is tailored to the individual, using organic essential oils.

It is important for the mother to be as stress free and relaxed as possible during pregnancy, as the unborn baby can experience this stress.

Benefits of massage to the mother

  • Prepares to whole body for birth
  • Condition of the skin is improved – stretch marks reduced
  • Lymphatic drainage is boosted
  • Muscles are loosened and relaxed
  • Stress and tension is soothed
  • Relaxation is induced

Benefits of massage to the baby

If the mother is more relaxed, the baby obviously benefits

  • Happier, calmer unborn baby
  • Easier birth
  • More relaxed new born

Arrange for your birthing partner to attend one of your pregnancy massage sessions (at the beginning or end) to learn some basic massage techniques during labour.  Massaging during labour will not only help relax the mother-to-be and calm the unborn baby, but it will give the birthing partner another vital role.
